In the depths of some of the most beautiful rugged scenery in the world, director Sidney Hayers creates a tough-but-tender love story that often keeps you on the very edge of the seat and rivets to the characters of the black-bearded trapper who survives in the heart of the wilds, and the mute bondsmaiden whom he buys as a bride, for two bags of gold dust. The very best of the film is its mid-section when, following a hair-raising fight with wolves, with the girl racing to save the trapper from ending as fox in the grip of hounds, she has to call on all her courage and strength of character to keep him alive. As the trapper, Oliver Reed has never been better.
