Modern remake of the famous musical about love, fame and tragedy - as you can tell by the blast of four letter words, which tend to distract your attention from the story of a rock idol on the way down who marries a pop singer on the way up to international stardom. In the Fredric March/James Mason role, Kris Kristofferson does best with the quieter moments, seeming sometimes too intense; too often director Frank Pierson appears to be allowing his players to act the scene as they think fit rather than under his guidance. Barbra Streisand sings a good variety of showy songs which her fans should enjoy. As well as star, executive producer and part composer of two of the film's songs, she also gets a credit for 'Ms Streisand's clothes from... her closet'! Even so, the film trails in a dismal third of the three versions, causing some carpers to call it A Bore is Starred.
