Chinatown is a classic murder mystery, which centres on Private Detective JJ Gittes (Nicholson), who uncovers some pictures of Water Commissioner Hollis Mulwray - a wealthy Californian landowner - in a compromising situation with a young lady.
The mystery deepens when it comes to light that it was someone other than Hollis's wife Evelyn (Dunawaye) who hired Gittes.
When Hollis is found dead in a reservoir, some real detective work must be done...
The 1940s-set plot is involved; the characters are truly deep and engrossing and the direction is steely.
Technically this film has been hailed as perfect and the cinematic genius shines through in every scene.
The plot is incredibly convoluted but the film is so beautiful to watch that whole effect is a completely compelling.
Full of murders, lies and adulteries, this movie will thrill, chill and excite.
