John Wayne and his favourite director John Ford swap the wide open spaces of the prairie for the wide open spaces of a Pacific island in this sprawling, brawling, but undistinguished adventure story that's packed with many Ford regulars such as Edgar Buchanan and Mike Mazurki. Heroes John Wayne and Lee Marvin are two dislikeable toughs who would break a beer bottle at an angry word. The acting class is supplied by Jack Warden as a doctor, and by Elizabeth Allen as his blue-stocking daughter. She had a talent for comic timing that was never properly exploited by Hollywood. Watch for the amusing continuity slip when she falls in the sea with stockings on, and emerges bare-legged.
