A rogue entry into the Bond bank (this was not from the Albert R Broccoli stable, and the title refers to the fact that Sean Connery had said he would never play Bond again, on retiring from spying in the early Seventies), this is a rather lengthy remake of Thunderball. The excellent Connery purrs lethally as 007, but is given hot competition in the acting stakes by Klaus Maria Brandauer, who makes Largo a memorable smiling psychotic. Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera are well cast as heroine and villainess, and respond wholeheartedly to the demands of their roles. The action is staged with all the mechanical efficiency of the official Bond films, and the script cuts down on the smut and beefs up the wit.
