This atmospheric, London-based thriller really does still thrill. Bunny Lake is a four-year old American girl who, on her first day at a Hampstead nursery school, has disappeared. But the problem for the police, led by puzzled Inspector Laurence Olivier, is that no one can recall having seen the child. Given that there's no record of her application to attend the school, all her belongings have disappeared, and there's no trace of her having travelled from the States, the Inspector is led to ponder whether the girl even exists. Naturally her parents, Carol Lynley and 2001's Keir Dullea are distraught. A superb mystery with some wonderful scenes, most notably the macabre dolls' hospital and Noël Coward playing a boozy old intellectual with a vast collection of sadistic-looking objets d'art.
