Inspired extravagant nonsense in the steps of Bob Hope's many other costume frolics. The novel setting of Venice in the 18th century gives him all sorts of opportunities for gags - as when he dips his finger in the Venetian waters, sniffs and remarks: `Ah, must be Canal Number Five.' The dithering, disarming romp has Hope forced to impersonate the great lover Casanova. The tremendous supporting cast which, including Basil Rathbone, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney and John Carradine, looks like a horror film director's dream, cunningly amplify the star's comedy by taking themselves and their roles in deadly earnest. Stay tuned for the ending in which Hope rebels against Paramount's idea that his character be given the chop. Underrated in its time.
