Laurence Olivier took a break from period and classical drama by starring in this uniquely English film with delightful performances from a bumper gallery of British character players headed by Margaret Rutherford, Miles Malleson, Edie Martin and Joyce Grenfell, while a teenage George Cole and Harry Fowler can be spotted as village boys. Olivier plays a Russian trying to cope with the British way of life in the immediate pre-war years. Often pleasantly satirical and always absorbing.
