Bynes got her big screen break in the romantic comedy Big Fat Liar opposite Frankie Muniz and Paul Giamatti.
The daughter of a dentist and a dentist's receptionist, she is the youngest of three children.
Bynes was interested in performing from the age of three and made her first TV commercial - for Nestle's Buncha Crunch - when she was seven.
She was given her own TV show at 13 - the Amanda Show - which was followed by a stint on The Nightmare Room.
Following her appearance in Big Fat Liar, she landed the lead role of Daphne in What A Girl Wants with Colin Firth and Anna Cnhancellor.
In 2005, she provided the voice of Piper for the sci-fi comedy Robots with Ewan McGregor and Halle Berry.
