In the Seventies, Gary Gilmore hit the headlines as the first convicted killer to be executed in the US for 10 years. This true-life TV movie, released straight to video, focuses on his last days, notably his developing relationship with his brother, Mikal (Giovanni Ribisi; Elias Koteas plays Gary), during which their violent family history is revealed. A quality drama from director Agnieszka Holland, cleverly unsensationalised. But with barely a functional being in sight, it's grim viewing.
