This little telefilm has so much cheerful charm that you want it to be better - and longer. Judi Dench, as the newly-widowed Elizabeth, is the film's driving force as the woman who, inspired by an encounter with a street musician, decides to reunite her all-girl band of the wartime years. Ian Holm enjoys himself as the drummer who had to 'drag up' to be part of the band, but there's too little screen time for Billie Whitelaw, Leslie Caron (still a dazzler at 69), Joan Sims, Olympia Dukakis, Cleo Laine and June Whitfield, nice though it is to see them all. The swing music is glorious although, like the girls, there's not enough. Most people will relish the film's rich nostalgia - even if it doesn't quite make the most of its opportunities.
