The actor made his big screen debut as Tilda Swinton's son in the Scottish drama Young Adam.
The son of Johnny McElhone - leader of the top Scottish group Texas, the youngster first expressed an interest in fashion.
After attending dance school in Glasgow, he was spotted by casting director Des Hamilton, who gave him his first role in Channel 4 comedy The Book Group.
Hamilton went on to cast him as Jim Gault in the harrowing drama Young Adam, which also starred Ewan McGregor.
A scene where he fell into the freezing Forth & Clyde Canal near Maryhill had to be re-shot because of a camera fault.
In 2004, he played the nine-year-old deaf son of Emily Mortimer in the romantic drama Dear Frankie.
