Puerto Rico-born ex-convict, poet and playwright Miguel Pinero was the toast of literary New York in the Seventies and his poetry is regarded as a precursor to rap and hip-hop (his first play, written in jail, won two awards). This biopic charts his short life (he died in 1988 at the age of 41) and struggles with drug addiction, with an excellent turn by Benjamin Bratt as the writer. Full of giddy camerawork and flashbacks, the film gathered several gongs on the festival circuit.
