The director's big screen debut - The Woodsman - caused controversy when it dealt sympathetically with a remorseful paedophile.
The movie, starring Kevin Bacon and co-written by Kassell, won the Satyajit Ray Award at the 2004 London Film Festival.
A graduate of New York University's Graduate Film Program, her short The Green Hour won the Warner Brothers Pictures Film Production Award.
While still a student she saw Steven Fechter's play The Woodsman being performed in New York and managed to persuade him to let him direct the movie version.
The screenplay went on to win the 2001 Slamdance Screenplay Competition and attracted the attention of studios.
Next up is an adaptation of Arthur Miller's The Ride Down Mt Morgan, starring Michael Douglas.
