Young JJ (Frankie Nasso) is a shy kid who bunks off school and wanders the streets of New York immersed in his memories of his mum (Tina Holmes), who was forced to put him into care. After one row too many with his sluttish foster-mother, he takes off to live rough in Central Park. Pursued by a gang, he encounters a hobo (Harvey Keitel) calling himself 'The Guardian' who protects the lad, naming him his 'Prince'. Also wandering in the park is wealthy Rebecca (Kathleen Turner), who's splitting up with her husband (Danny Aiello). How all these lives intertwine forms the backbone of this modern children's fairytale which, although slow and sentimental, has a certain charm while raising serious issues.
