Million Dollar Baby
Eastwood turns a tired genre on its head with a boxing movie that delivers a knockout blow to expectations. Swank flourishes, thanks to a richly human storyline, & won an Oscar for her role.
What is it! I read the reviews, took some tissues, sat down ready for some excellence alas what I discover is yet another Hollywood Hype film. Clint Eastwood's self indulgence with direction and acting. Hilary, okay performance going from dour to more dour with a little intensity thrown in and Morgan Freeman to top it all with more morosity than is necessary no matter what life we lead! The only scenes of any merit which was amusing/lifting/well acted were between the priest and Eastwood.

I saw grown men weep.

Probabley the best film I've seen since the Shawshank Redemption. A great story, beautifully told. Swank was a complete revelation. Freeman and Eastwood are their usual excellent selves. The surprise (well it was to me) twist to the tale, was brilliantly portrayed and Swank's character just grew and grew. If this film does not win the Best Picture Oscar I will be shocked. The same goes for Swank in the best actresss category.

This was one of the most watchable and moving films that I have seen. Certainly the best film about boxing people since Raging Bull.
Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood deserve Oscars.
Eastwood showed a wonderful grasp of the subject and portrayal of the kind of people that you find in and around boxing gyms.
Such was the emotional effect of the story line, the audience at the cinema where I saw the film sat in their seats not wanting to leave for several minutes.

I went to see this film last night and was completely blown away by the outstanding performance of Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank. This film is really not just about the boxing but a journey of emotional ups and downs. It gives you time to get to know the characters and really get into the film, taking in every high and low. If this film does not get an Oscar it will be a travesty, be prepared for the twists and turns, I came away a blubbering mess!
