The Wachowski brothers are responsible for The Matrix series, and both of them have adopted a "no publicity" policy.
Both were educated at Whitney Young High School, a college acknowledged as a magnet for bright or gifted youths.
A comic book fanantic, he and his brother began writing scripts which evolved into the screenplay Assassins.
The thriller, starring Sylvester Stallone and Antonia Banderas as a pair of hitmen, was reworked by Brian "LA Confidential" Helgeland.
However, the film flopped and The Wachowskis (unsuccessfully) asked for their credits to be removed.
Their next submission to producer Joel Silver was The Matrix - but Warners had no faith in the brothers to make such a complex sci-fi thriller.
Their response was to make Bound - a heist movie starring Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly as two lesbians in a love triangle with Joe Pantoliano.
Despite a poor box office performance, it managed to convince Warners to bankroll The Matrix, with each of the brothers earning $1m.
Despite disagreements with Silver over casting (he wanted Will Smith for Neo), Keanu Reeves, Carie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne were in place.
Industry rumour has it that the Wachowski's have thrashed out a deal which gives their five key collaborators a single first dollar gross participation.
Yet, they still remain as mysterious as ever.
At a press conference they were asked if they were prepared to become legends."Legends of what exactly?" was the reply.
