Busily plotted and engaging adventure hokum set in old California, with a rumbustuous turn from Ricardo Montalban as a renegade Mexican exile setting about to loot Los Angeles in 1824. Cyd Charisse gets stuck with being the boring romantic interest for Montalban when she should have been dancing her socks off in MGM musicals, but gnag leader J Carrol Naish and despot Gilbert Roland have a fine old time ideally cast in this boys' movie, a kind of pseudo-western. A decent production, but it never really reaches the heights that the best movies of this kind (The Mark of Zorro, for instance) achieve.
