A ravishingly shot (by Nestor Almendros) story of immigrants to the Texas Panhandle in 1916. Director Terrence Malick really captures the feeling of time and place, although he fails to build up the story's relationships well enough to sustain his own obvious ambitions, despite charismatic acting by Richard Gere, Linda Manz and Sam Shepard. But it was no surprise on Oscar night when Almendros stepped up to receive his well-deserved Academy Award.
