A slapstick western from the hands of director Burt Kennedy, who also made Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter. Jack Elam, who played such an important part in the success of those two films, contributes an amusing cameo here as a would-be fearsome western outlaw, John Wesley Hardin (whose real-life story was allegedly told in a highly-coloured adventure yarn called The Lawless Breed, with Rock Hudson as Hardin). The supporting cast is full of faces from Kennedy's own little stock company of excellent character players, including John Dehner, Henry Jones, Don `Red' Barry, Harry Carey Jr, Kathleen Freeman and Paul Fix. Sinatra tries to sink himself into the role of the grubby, unscrupulous small-time outlaw of the title - although, quite honestly, it isn't his scene.
