He made his feature debut as Noah Claypole in Carol Reed's classic film Oliver alongside Oliver Reed.
Subsequent TV appearances included Up Pompeii with Frankie Howard and Play of the Month The Changeling.
On the big screen, he appeared in the horror film Vampira as well as playing the wicked squire in Joseph Andrews.
TV roles included Brideshead Revisited, Shine On Harvey Moon and Reilly: Ace Of Spies before his memorable turn as Pastor Finch in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit.
In 1991, he starred in Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books and starred alongside Liam Neeson in the thriller Under Suspicion.
Dividing his time between the big and small screens, appearances ranged from The Murder Of Stephen Lawrence to The Most Fertile Man In Ireland.
On stage his performance in the lead role of Steven Daldry's An Inspector Calls transferred from the West End to Broadway.
Back on the big screen he appeared in a series of British gangster movies including Gangster No1 and Shiner as well as comedy Kevin And Perry Go Large.
Recent work includes the role of a cop in Trauma opposite Colin Firth and a crooked businessman in Matthew Vaughn's Layer Cake.
