A very superior soap opera which must almost have won its star, Bette Davis, yet another Academy Award: she was nominated yet again but lost this time to Vivien Leigh's Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. This story of a society woman dying from a brain tumour, but offered a brief chance of happiness, was lovingly directed by Edmund Goulding, also Miss Davis's director on That Certain Woman, The Old Maid and The Great Lie.
