The old story of a pop group's rise and fall, told in the flashy cinematic style of the Sixties but with a script shot through with Seventies cynicism. Slade's Noddy Holder seems the most natural performer of the pop quartet and his boisterous charmlessness clashes amusingly with the refined background of the band's impresario (played by Tom Conti). Some striking location work in Sheffield and another of Johnny Shannon's sharp portrayals of a small-time hood add to the film's rough-and-ready appeal.
