Few films have hung their heart on their sleeve with such clarity and detail as this independently financed portrait of poverty, racism and the fight to establish unions in the Chicago of 1917-1919. With excellent performances from Damien Leake, Clarence Fielder, Moses Gunn and Alfre Woodard, the film is as compelling dramatically as its historical analysis is fascinating. The streets and stockyards it portrays look convincingly real.
