Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this charming, colourful and satirical musical first saw light of day on stage in 1947. The casting gambles all pay off: Fred Astaire is lovable but never fey as Finian, the Irish wanderer; Petula Clark (in the role created on Broadway by Ella Logan, aunt of Jimmy) is fresh and charming as his daughter; and Tommy Steele funny and tuneful as Og the leprechaun. The song hits include Old Devil Moon.
