David Hemmings

Died: December 4 2003(heart attack)

The actor, director, producer, and screenwriter is probably best rememembered as the mod photographer in Antonioni's BlowUp.

However, he later won industry recognition as a director and as one of the founders of the Hemdale Corporation.

"People thought I was dead. But I wasn't. I was just directing The A-Team."

As a child her possessed a unique voice as a boy soprano and Benjamin Britten composed the part of Miles in Turn of the Screw for him.

As a teenager he left home and headed for Austria where he performed magic and played the guitar in nightclubs.

He made his big screen debut in the racing drama The Rainbow Jacket with Robert Morley but it was BlowUp in 1966 that got him noticed.

Subsequent appearances included Camelot, The Charge of the Light Brigade and the sci-fi yarn Barbarella with Jane Fonda.

He then drifted into character roles and made his mark as a director with movies including Running Scared and Just a Gigolo as well as TV series such as Magnum PI, The A-Team and Werewolf.

In the new millennium, he returned to the big screen with feature roles in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, the British drama Last Orders and the Tony Scott thriller Spy Game.

In 2001, he appeared in Mean Machine and went on to take minor roles in Equilibrium and Gangs of New York.

He was despatched in the first reel of the The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and made his last appearance in the horror-thriller Blessed.

His son, British actor Nolan Hemmings, made a name for himself in Steven Speilberg's Band Of Brothers and Brit flick Last Orders.

Hemmings died of a heart attacked aged 62 while filming in Romania.
