A modern, tough British drama about backstreets youth featuring Mel Smith, whose abrasive performances in this and similar roles have built him an unusual parallel career to that he enjoys in his comedy shows with Griff Rhys-Jones. Here he plays a garage owner who employs the central character, a black youth who, with his friends, is hoping to win an upcoming reggae soundsystem competition. The violence and racial tensions that follow are predictable enough as the film sketches out familiar problems without providing any ready answers.
