The respected screenwriter made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Shattered Glass.
The movie, which told the story of Stephen Glass, a writer who invented articles for his magazine, attracted a raft of awards.
Ray first attracted attention for co-writing the script to Volcano, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche.
"You're the director. That doesn't mean bully people but you don't need to be so deferential that you're not actually leading."
He went on to pen the screenplay for Hart's War, starring Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell.
Upcoming projects include his second directorial outing The 11th Hour, which he also co-wrote.
