Among director Ralph Thomas's best films, this is also about the most exciting he ever made. It's the true story of an assault by midget submarines on a giant German battleship, Tirpitz, that threatened Allied shipping during World War Two. The photography by Ernest Steward is impressive, and the climax will have even non-war film fans on the edges of their seats. John Mills, John Gregson and Donald Sinden have been this way before, and know how to grit their teeth in the cause of heroism.
