A lighter-than-air MGM musical which producer Arthur Freed had originally intended as a Fred Astaire-Judy Garland vehicle in 1946. Garland dropped out, however, and the film went in front of the cameras in June 1951 with Vera-Ellen as the nimble Fred's leading lady. An attractive score by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer includes Seeing's Believing (well-named, since the stars literally dance on air to it) and one that became something of an Astaire trademark, I Wanna Be a Dancin' Man. Alice Pearce, who scored such a hit in another MGM musical, On the Town (as Gene Kelly's wallflower date) raises more laughs here as a sassy Salvation Army girl. Short by musical standards, it's over all too soon.
