Though made on a budget, this is an accomplished third screen version of PC Wren's famous story of intrigue and derring-do in the Foreign Legion, with impressive photography and a lively screenplay . This time one of the three Geste brothers - along with most of the original plot - is inexplicably lost. Guy Stockwell, brother of Dean, is on rousing form in the title role as Beau, who joins the Legion after taking the blame for a crime he didn't commit. Telly Savalas is also first rate as the sadistic Sergeant Major Dagineau, a role previously played by Noah Beery Sr and Brian Donlevy.
