Having already disposed of all unfriendly Japanese in World War Two, John Wayne here continued his campaign against any suspicious characters with Communist leanings. He plays a seafaring soldier of fortune but the result is not too good. Wayne is reputed to have directed some scenes while William Wellman was off sick. Joy Kim comes on to sing a couple of songs, but it's no more bizarre than seeing voluptuous Anita Ekberg as a shapeless Chinese woman. Still, only Wayne could get away with a line like this: Lauren Bacall asks him in one scene why he killed a Chinese soldier and he replies: 'Seemed like a good idea.'
