This is a grim and unrelenting biopic of beautiful Hollywood star Frances Farmer, all the more distressing because the horrific incidents featured are all true. Jessica Lange really suffers in the title role, getting drunk, being raped and assaulted in a mental hospital (where she's been committed by her hateful, overbearing mother), and finally ending up undergoing a brain operation that ruins her life for ever. Not exactly a jolly night's entertainment, but a solidly crafted drama all the same. Veteran actor John Randolph has a small role as a judge. He scored a big success three years later as Jack Nicholson's Mafia father in 'Prizzi's Honor'. Look fast for Kevin Costner as a character in an alley. He has one line.
