Robert Duvall won an Oscar for his portrayal of a down-on-his-luck country singer in this low-key domestic drama. After the break-up of his marriage, Mac Sledge (Duvall) takes a job working for Rosa Lee (Tess Harper), a religious widow who owns a motel and gas station. They fall in love and Sledge tries to make a comeback as a singer. Although Duvall plays his part well, this is a very talky film with no action to spice it up and give it tension. Australian director Bruce Beresford perhaps should have let an American direct this quintessentially American story, although he succeeded later with Driving Miss Daisy.
