This teen film about two boys about to be drafted into World War Two is a nostalgia picture but nothing special.
Although competently and occasionally amusingly written, it doesn't make us care about its characters and, however hard the cast tries, the movie remains superficial.
Sean Penn and Nicolas Cage certainly look the parts, but Cage's accent jars, as it would when he went on to star in Peggy Sue Got Married, and only Elizabeth McGovern seems really of the period.
Bad boy Penn and female lead McGovern refused to do any press interviews or promotion for the film and it died without trace in the US.
An onion too to director Richard Benjamin for not spotting that the 'contemporary' Paramount newsreel logo he uses bears a copyright date of 1927!
