Terms of Endearment

Oscar-winning comedy drama about the love-hate relationship between an eccentric mother (Shirley MacLaine) and her headstrong daughter (Debra Winger). Based on the novel by Larry McMurtry, the movie, which also stars Jack Nicholson, skilfully avoids sentimentality even when the dark shadow of cancer arises. Trivia: Burt Reynolds, James Garner and Harrison Ford all passed up on the role of astronaut Garrett Breedlove before it went to Nicholson (who won a best supporting Oscar).

What starts as a finely balanced mix of comedy and drama, about a mother-daughter (Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger) relationship and its ups and downs over the years, slips mid way into soap-opera as the daughter gets cancer.

Even so, there wasn't a dry eye as the film topped the box-office the world over and won Oscars for Best Film, Director, Actress (MacLaine), Supporting Actor (Jack Nicholson) and Screenplay. MacLaine and Debra Winger kick up a storm - though Nicholson still steals the show.
