Although perhaps religiously complex to non-Jews, this is a rewarding and searingly well acted story of the unexpected friendship between two teenagers who come from families with widely differing beliefs. Rod Steiger, as a powerful rabbi, and Barry Miller, as one of the youths, have seldom bettered the performances they give here. Moving, intelligent and first-class cinema.
