John Wayne makes his fortune and foils the bad guys in this pretty routine Western that's only a couple of notches up from the second-feature oaters he was making in the Thirties. Production values are obviously better and the supporting cast includes Wayne's old pals Ward Bond and Walter Brennan. But the knowledge that Wayne objected to working with leading lady Vera Hruba Ralston explains the Duke's lacklustre performace. He was stuck with her because she was Republic boss Herbert J Yates' girl at the time. Like Vera, it passes the time.
