John Huston's burlesque Western with Paul Newman in grizzled form as the real-life frontier character who was the self-appointed 'only law west of the Pecos'.
A star-studded cast includes Ava Gardner, Jacqueline Bisset and (in strange cameo roles) Stacy Keach, Tab Hunter and Anthony Perkins.
But the picture is stolen from all of them by a huge bear. Whether broozing, brawling or hugging the hero, this is a bear in a million.
The film doesn't quite make the same grade, although it remains mildly enjoyable up to the firecracker, free-for-all finale.
Overall, though, the narrative is a shade too deliberate to make things go with the same swing throughout.
