This story of two cousins turning to crime to get rich quick is set on the seamier side of New York. Director Stuart Rosenberg seems to have set out to make a Martin Scorsese film, obviously influenced by such films as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Unfortunately, Rosenberg lacks a firm grip on the actors or the story, so the result is a bit of a mess. Instead of Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel, we have here Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts. Rourke is okay, but Roberts give a vigorous display of loud over-acting. Daryl Hannah, as Rourke's girlfriend, is pallid and uninteresting. The lesson here is clear: if you want to make a Martin Scorsese film, get Scorsese to make it for you.
