Alfre Woodard has the title role in this Disney biography as the mother of professional basketball star Isiah Thomas. She's a proud black woman who is forced to leave her Deep South home during the Fifties when she refuses to buckle under to white exploitation. She settles in Chicago, where she struggles gamely to raise the nine children her husband has abandoned. Being shown in two parts, the first segment, dealing with the home life in detail, is by far the best, although the writer doesn't give Woodard enough material to create a wholly rounded characterisation.
