John Wayne's first film as director and star, an epic Western about the state of Texas's fight for independence from Mexico, was a troubled affair. Wearing one expression - that of a man with a $12million budget weighing heavy on his mind - Wayne plays legendary hero Davy Crockett and spouts endless pompous slogans about a better way of life and it's not until the rip-roaring crushing climax of total massacre that the film comes alive. A pet project of Wayne's, this took over 10 years to come to fruition.
