A typical rites-of-passage drama about six lusty males surfing, drinking and pursuing females during an idyllic summer on the Hawaiian islands in 1959. A soundtrack of topical hits adds to the period feel, but it's a very shallow affair with all the women portrayed in a one-dimensional manner purely as sex objects. And leading man Chris Makepeace walks through the film with an expression that looks as though he's just been hit over the head with a heavy object. The final scenes of male bonding against the backdrop of 18-foot surf waves during a hurricane are worth waiting for, however. So is a good kung fu sequence choreographed by co-star Sho Kosugi.
