Hypnotically absurd Burton-Taylor romantic melodrama, made at the height of their fame when they had their pick of scripts. In incautious casting, Taylor is an artistic hippy unmarried mother and Burton the California married preacher teacher who falls for her. This expensive flop for MGM is a great big pretentious mess, which damaged everybody's career, not least director Vincente Minnelli's. The Big Sur filming always looks a million dollars, and there's one really distinguished item - the Oscar-winning best song The Shadow of Your Smile. Charles Bronson comes off worst as a sculptor, though he does get to fight Burton.
