All That Heaven Allows

Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman star is this affecting and sumptuously filmed tearjerker from 50s melodrama specialist Douglas Sirk. Wyman is terrific as the widow who's ready to settle into a quiet life but is rejuvenated by her love for young gardener Hudson. But their plans to marry turn to heartbreak as the rest of society pours scorn on their union.

A follow-up for the stars (Jane Wyman, Rock Hudson) and director (Douglas Sirk) to their big hit, Magnificent Obsession, this romantic weepie appears very artificial today, like a women's magazine story of the Fifties sprung to life. But the lush Technicolor photography by Russell Metty still looks as good now as it did then, and Heaven does indeed allow Jane yet another happy ending.
