The feature debut of Pee-wee Herman, the on-screen persona of cult comedian Paul Reubens, is a most stylish affair. From the start, when the childlike Pee-wee awakens in a room filled with Heath Robinson-style contraptions on the traumatic day his beloved red bicycle is stolen, we know we're in for a visual treat. There's not really much of a story. But Pee-wee, with his comical white pan-sticked face, rosy cheeks and red painted lips, offers us the perfect opportunity to re-experience our own innocent wonder as we see things through his eyes. Director Tim Burton, whose later work was to include Beetlejuice, Batman and Edward Scissorhands, paints a colourful canvas, and the overall effect is rather like a huge box of brightly coloured toys being spilled onto the screen. Don't be fooled into thinking that this film is just for kids - adults will find it inventive, imaginative and totally engaging.
