This thoroughly enjoyable visit to the hard-drinking hard-working world of Australian sheep shearers heralded international recognition for the Australian film industry and garnered great critical acclaim. Following on its heels came such films as Breaker Morant and Mad Max. Star Jack Thompson won a Best Actor prize at the Australian Film Awards for his portrayal of a shearer who leads a strike while managing to hold onto his own job. If there are shades of Fred Zinnemann's The Sundowners, that's no bad thing and, in fact, the shearing scenes were shot in the same shed!
