John Lithgow plays a Vietnam war veteran who has turned his back on the world and Ralph Macchio is the son he deserted 15 years ago in this promising but ultimately pretty average drama. The emotionally battle scarred soldier at odds with civilian life was a bit of a hoary old chestnut even when this was made and this tale gives us few new slants. Even the usually reliable Lithgow has trouble making his character believable and Karate Kid Macchio's character is too thinly sketched for him to fill it out effectively. The film stars out well enough but soon degenerates into second rate soap opera.
