This fourth outing for Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel has him ridding the world of nuclear armaments and battling against Nuclear Man, a super-baddie created by Superman's arch-enemy Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman). Although marginally better than Superman III, it's still a long way from the first two films. The special effects look decidedly cut-rate, the direction is flaccid and the script (based on a story by Reeve) is pretty poor, too. Hackman gets most of the best lines and he has to work hard for those. Still, the scene where Superman disposes of all the world's nuclear weapons by tossing them into the sun and the final battle on the moon with Nuclear Man are both entertaining. The undemanding will enjoy it, but if you really liked Superman and Superman II, you'll be disappointed with this.
