Garner put on weight for the role and emphasised his thinning hair, delivering a poignant performance matched by Mary Tyler Moore as his wife. Moore and Garner convey a sense of middle-aged love and zest for life rarely seen in films at any level. It's based on a true-life story and the doctor's real cousin, Norman Lear, a well-known show-business figure, was the film's executive producer.
